COLONOSCOPY PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS  for Drs. Eyvazzadeh, Reilly and Bowers

Purchase (prescription not required):

  • 238 gram bottle of Miralax® (Glycolax®)
  • 4 Dulcolax® (Bisacodyl) Laxative Tablets
  • 64 oz. bottle of Gatorade® – NOT RED

One Day Prior to Colonoscopy Procedure

  • Nothing to eat the day before your procedure, only clear liquids.
  • It is important that you drink plenty of clear liquids throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
  • NOTHING IS TO BE TAKEN BY MOUTH 3 HOURS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE.
  • Clear Liquids include:
  • Water / Iced Tea / Lemonade / Gatorade®/Black Coffee or tea (no milk or creamers).
  • Soft drinks:  orange, ginger ale, cola, Pepsi®, Sprite®, 7Up®.
  • Kool-Aid® (lemonade or orange flavors only).
  • Strained fruit juices without pulp such as apple, white grape, white cranberry.
  • Jell-O®, lemon, lime or orange (no fruit or toppings).
  • Popsicles, Italian Ice (No Ice Cream, sherbets, or fruit bars).
  • Chicken or beef bouillon/broth.

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING RED OR PURPLE

DO NOT DRINK ANY ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

DIABETIC PATIENTS:  Consult your physician

  • At 4:00 pm, take (2) Dulcolax® (Bisacodyl) Laxative Tablets.  Swallow the tablets whole with an 8 oz. glass of water.  At 8:00 pm, take the additional (2) Dulcolax® (Bisacodyl) Laxative Tablets with 8 oz. of water.  The package may direct you not to exceed (2) tablets at any time but for the purpose of this examination, you should take (4) total.
  • Mix the 238 gm of Miralax® in 64 oz. of Gatorade® and shake the solution until the Miralax® is dissolved.  You will drink half (32 oz) of this solution this evening.  Drink 8 oz glassfuls at your own pace.  It may take several hours to drink the solution.
  • Remember to stay close to toilet facilities.

DAY OF COLONOSCOPY PROCEDURE

  • Five (5) hours before your procedure, drink the other half (32 oz) of the Miralax®/Gatorade® mixture within a two (2) hour period. This may require you to get up very early if you are scheduled for an early procedure.
  • NOTHING IS TO BE TAKEN BY MOUTH 3 HOURS PRIOR TO PROCEDURE.
  • If you use an inhaler, please bring it with you to your procedure.

8am- 10 am colonoscopy prep instructions with Miralax.

1. The day prior to colonoscopy:

• You may have normal breakfast and lunch.

• Start clear liquids* after lunch.

• At 1 pm take 2 Dulcolax (bisacodyl) laxative tablets, available without prescription.

• At 3 pm take additional 2 Dulcolax (bisacodyl) laxative tablets.

• Dilute Miralax ® 238 grams (available without prescription) in 1 gallon (128 oz) of water, juice or Gatorade. Drink 8 oz every 20-30 minutes. Begin drinking about 4-5 pm.

2. The day of colonoscopy:

• Don’t drink or eat anything after the above prep is taken. Nothing to eat or drink at least 3 hours prior to procedure.

• Arrive for the procedure 30 -45 minutes prior to scheduled time.

3. How to adjust your medications before colonoscopy?

  1. • Coumadin:

□ Stop ………. days prior to colonoscopy. □ May continue without interruption

• Aspirin:

□ Stop…………days prior to colonoscopy. □ May continue without interruption.

• Plavix (Clopidogrel)

□ Stop …………days prior to colonoscopy. □ May continue without interruption.

4. Avoid over-the-counter pain medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, or other NSAiDs like Celebrex, Naproxyn, Indocin etc.) for 5 days prior to colonoscopy. You can use Tylenol instead.

5. Oral diabetic medications: On the day prior to colonoscopy use half of the dose. Don’t take diabetic pills in the morning on the day of colonoscopy.

6. Insulin: inform us that you are taking insulin. Specific instructions will be given.

7. Other instructions:

• Because sedation will be used for colonoscopy, you will not be able to drive for 8 hours after the procedure. Please, have someone drive you to and from the endoscopy suite.

• Please, call us in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule the procedure.

1. The day prior to colonoscopy:

• You may have normal breakfast and lunch.

• Start clear liquids* after lunch.

• The MoviPrep carton contains 4 pouches and a disposable container for mixing. You must complete the entire prep to ensure the most effective cleansing.

• At 5 pm Empty 1 Pouch A and 1 Pouch B into the disposable container.

• Add lukewarm drinking water to the top line of the container. Mix to dissolve.

• The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 15 minutes, drink the solution down to the next mark (approximately 8 oz), until the full liter is consumed.

• Drink 16 oz of the clear liquid of your choice. This is a necessary step to ensure adequate hydration and an effective prep

• At 8 pm Empty 1 Pouch A and 1 Pouch B into the disposable container

• Add lukewarm drinking water to the top line of the container. Mix to dissolve

• The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 15 minutes, drink the solution down to the next mark (approximately 8 oz), until the full liter is consumed.

• Drink 16 oz of the clear liquid of your choice. This is a necessary step to ensure adequate hydration and an effective prep.

After 10 am colonoscopy prep instructions with Miralax.

1. The day prior to colonoscopy:

• You may have normal breakfast and lunch.

• Start clear liquids* after lunch.

• Stay on clear liquids only.

• Drink the remaining dose of Miralax® (half a gallon = 64 oz) over 2 hours. Begin approximately 4-5 hours before colonoscopy.

• Don’t drink or eat anything after the above prep for at least 3-4 hours before colonoscopy

• Arrive for the procedure 30 -45 minutes prior to scheduled time.

3. How to adjust your medications before colonoscopy?

COLONOSCOPY PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS – Dr. Boylan

Purchase 

  • 238 gram bottle of Miralax® (Glycolax®) (prescription not required)

One Day Prior to Colonoscopy Procedure:

  • If you are scheduled for a Morning appointment nothing to eat the day before your procedure, only clear liquids.
  • If you are scheduled for an Afternoon appointment, then you are able to eat a light breakfast, No solids after that.
  • It is important that you drink plenty of clear liquids throughout the day to prevent dehydration.  See list of clear liquids at bottom of page.
  • At 5:00 pm, take (4) Dulcolax laxative tablets (NOT stool softener) with 8 oz. of water. Swallow the tablets whole with full glass of water.  The package may direct you not to exceed (2) tablets at any time but for the purpose of this examination, you should take (4).
  • Mix the 238 gm of Miralax in 64  oz of Gatorade and shake the solution until the Miralax is dissolved. You will drink half (32oz) of the solution this evening. Drink 8oz glassfuls at your own pace. it may take several hours to drink the solution.
  • Remember to stay close to toilet facilities.

Day of Colonoscopy Procedure:

  • Five hours before you leave your home to go to your procedure, drink the other half (32 oz) of the Miralax/Gatorade mixture. This may require you to get up very early if you have an early morning appointment time.  You should not have any additional clear liquids at this time, only the laxative mixture.  NOTHING by mouth after you complete your laxative mixture.
  • Please finish second dose of MIRALAX/GATORADE within 2 hours of start.

Clear LIquids:

  • Water
  • Chicken or Beef bouillon/broth
  • Coffee or Tea (without milk or nondairy creamer)
  • Soft drinks: orange, ginger ale, cola, Pepsi, Sprite, 7up, etc.
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid – lemonade or orange flavors only
  • Iced Tea
  • Lemonade
  • Strained fruit juices without pulp; apple, white grape, white cranberry
  • Hard Candies
  • Jell-O; lemon, lime or orange (no fruit or toppings)
  • Popsicles, Italian ice (no ice cream, sherbets or fruit bars

Do not drink or eat anything red or purple

Do not drink any alcoholic beverages

Diabetic Patients:

  • In addition to above you may also have Boost nutritional energy drink.  NO Boost is allowed the day of your procedure.

PREPARATION FOR COLONOSCOPY – MOVIPREP

 

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY and CAREFULLY!

STOP TAKING: Aspirin, products containing aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, and fish oil 5 days prior to your procedure.

–          All heart and blood pressure pills should be taken on the morning of the procedure with a sip of water.

–          You must have a driver present when you arrive for your procedure and you must be driven home. Public transportation or cabs is not allowed.

ONE DAY BEFORE YOUR COLONOSCOPY:

You are to have only CLEAR liquids the day before your test with no Red, Purple, or Orange Dye. Solid foods, milk, or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include clear juices without pulp, water, broth, or bouillon, black coffee or tea (without milk/creamers), and Gatorade.  You may have Jell-O, soft drinks and popsicles as long as they are not colored red, purple, or orange.

  1. The MoviPrep carton contains 4 pouches and a disposable container for mixing. You must complete the entire prep to ensure the most effective cleansing. If preferred, mix the MoviPrep solution ahead of time and refrigerate prior to drinking. (The mixed MoviPrep solution should be used within 24 hours)
  1. First prepare the MoviPrep solution. Empty 1 pouch A and 1 Pouch B into the disposable container. Add lukewarm drinking water to the top line of the container. Mix to dissolve. You may add a tea bag to alter/enhance the taste if desired.
  1. At ________ begin drinking the solution. The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 15 minutes, drink the solution down to the next mark (approximately 8 oz), until the full liter is complete. Now drink 16 oz of the clear liquid of your choice.
  1. Repeat step #2 and prepare second liter of MoviPrep solution and refridgerate.
  1. At _________, begin drinking the solution. Every 15 minutes drink the solution down to the next mark (approximately 8 oz), until the full liter is complete.

 

 

Diabetics:  on the day prior to your procedure, take your usual morning dose of medications, do not take your evening dose; on the day of the procedure – do not take diabetic medications.

Instructions For Colonoscopy Preparation
NuLytely (Diabetic-split)

You will need to fill the prescription for NuLytely Bowel Prep Kit and Reglan 10mg #4.

The Day Before Examination:

  • Clear liquid diet all day long.
  • Take ½ the normal dose of all diabetic medications
  • Take Reglan at: 12:00pm, 4:00pm and at bedtime.
  • 12:00PM: Mix solution. Add lukewarm drinking water to top of line on bottle. Cap bottle and shake to dissolve the powder. Refrigerate. The solution will be clear and colorless. Use within 48 hours.
  • 5:00PM: Drink solution. Drink 8oz glass every 10 minutes for a total of 12 glasses (3/4 of solution). Drink each glass quickly rather than drinking small amounts continuously.

The Day of the Colonoscopy, 4 hours before procedure:

  •  Take Reglan.
  • Wait ½ hour. Resume drinking solution, 8oz glass every 10 minutes. Continue drinking until solution is finished (4 glasses).
  • Hold all diabetic medications until after procedure. All other medications can be taken with enough water to swallow.

  •  Mix solution. Add lukewarm drinking water to top of line on bottle. Cap bottle and shake to dissolve the powder. Refrigerate. The solution will be clear and colorless. Use within 48 hours.
  • 10:00AM: Drink solution. Drink 8oz glass every 10-15 minutes for a total of 8 glasses (1/2 of solution). Drink each glass quickly rather than drinking small amounts continuously.

  • Mix MiraLax powder with one gallon of Gatorade (no red or purple).
  • 5:00PM: Drink 8oz glass of solution every 10 minutes, for a total of 12 glasses (3/4 of solution).

The Day of the Colonoscopy, 4 hours before procedure:

  •  Resume drinking solution, 8oz glass every 10 minutes. Continue drinking until solution is finished (4 glasses). After finishing preparation, you should have nothing else to drink until after your procedure.
  •  You may take your morning medications.

1. The day prior to colonoscopy:

  • You may have a light breakfast.
  • Start clear liquids* after breakfast.
  • The SUPREP kit contains two bottles and a mixing cup.  You must complete the entire prep to ensure the most effective cleansing.
  • At 5:00 PM, take the first dose of SUPREP.
  • Pour one (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.
  • Add cool drinking water to the 16 ounce line on the container and mix.
  • Drink ALL of the liquid in the container.
  • You MUST drink two (2) more 16 ounce containers of water over the next hour.
  • Continue to drink more clear liquids.
  • At 8:00 PM, take the second dose of SUPREP.
  • Pour one (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.
  • Add cool drinking water to the 16 ounce line on the container and mix.
  • Drink ALL of the liquid in the container.
  • You MUST drink two (2) more 16 ounce containers of water over the next hour.

  • You may have a light breakfast.
  • Start clear liquids* after breakfast.
  • The SUPREP kit contains two bottles and a mixing cup.  You must complete the entire prep to ensure the most effective cleansing. 
  • At 5:00 PM, take the first dose of SUPREP.
  • Pour one (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.
  • Add cool drinking water to the 16 ounce line on the container and mix.
  • Drink ALL of the liquid in the container.
  • You MUST drink two (2) more 16 ounce containers of water over the next hour.
  • Continue to drink more clear liquids.

2.  The morning of the colonoscopy:

  • Five (5) hours before the colonoscopy, take the second dose of SUPREP.
  • Pour one (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.
  • Add cool drinking water to the 16 ounce line on the container and mix.
  • Drink ALL of the liquid in the container.
  • You MUST drink two (2) more 16 ounce containers of water over the next hour.
  • Continue to drink more clear liquids.
  • Don’t drink or eat anything after the above prep is taken for at least 3-4 hours before the colonoscopy.
  • Arrive for the procedure 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled time.

3.  How to adjust your medications before the colonoscopy.

  • Coumadin:                  _____ Stop (   ) days prior to the colonoscopy    _____ Continue without interruption.
  • Aspirin:                       _____ Stop (   ) days prior to the colonoscopy     _____ Continue without interruption.
  • Plavix (Clopidogrel):   _____ Stop (   ) days prior to the colonoscopy     _____ Continue without interruption.

4.   Avoid over the counter pain medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen or other NSAIDs like Celebrex, Naproxyn, Indocin, etc.) for 5 days prior to the colonoscopy.

5.  Oral diabetic medications: On the day prior to the colonoscoy use half of the dose.  Don’t take diabetic pills in the morning on the day of your colonoscopy.

6.  Insulin: Inform us if you are taking insulin.  Specific instructions will be given.

7.  Other instructions:

  • Because sedation will be used for the colonoscopy, you will not be able to drive for 8 hours after the procedure.  Please have someone drive you to and from the endoscopy suite.
  •  Please call us in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule your procedure.

Clear liquids are liquids that you can see through.  Includes tea, broth water, jello, etc.
